THINGS I'VE LEARNED

I've learned that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you'd better know something.

I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to the best that others can do.

I've learned that you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I've learned that you should always leave loved ones with loving words, because some day it will be the last time you see them.

I've learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down turn out to be the ones who help you get back up.

I've learned that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I've learned that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I've learned that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you.

I've learned that you should never tell a child that their dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if they believed it.

I've learned that no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I've learned that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other, and just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I've learned that sometimes it's hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people's feelings, and standing up for what you believe.

I've learned that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

I've learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I've learned that heroes are the people who do what has to be done, when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I've learned that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I've learned that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

DO IT ANYWAY

People are often unreasonable, illogical,

And self-centered;

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you

Of selfish, ulterior motives;

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some

False friends and some true enemies;

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank;

People may cheat you;

Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,

someone could destroy overnight;

Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,

they may be jealous;

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,

people will often forget tomorrow;

Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,

and it may never be enough;

Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis

it is between you and God.

It was never between you and them anyway.

TO LET GO
To let Go...Doesn't mean to stop caring,
it means I can't do it for someone else.
It's not to cut myself off,
It's the realization that I can't control another.
To Let Go....Is not to enable,
but to allow learning from natural consequences.
Is to admit powerlessness,
which means the outcome is not in my hands.
To Let Go....Is not to try to change or blame another,
I can only change myself.
Is not to care for,
but to care about.
To let Go....Is not to fix,
but to be supportive.
Is not to judge,
but to allow another to be a human being.
To let Go....Is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcome,
but to allow others to effect their own outcomes.
Is not to be protective,
it is to permit another to face reality.
To Let Go....Is not to deny, but to accept.
Is not to nag, scold, or argue,
but to search out my own
shortcomings and to correct them.
To Let Go....Is not to adjust everything to my desires,
but to take each day as it comes,
and to cherish the moment.
Is not to criticize or regulate anyone,
but to try to become whatever dream I can be.
To Let Go....Is not to regret the past,
but to grow and live for the future.
Is to fear less and to love more.
And I do "LOVE YOU"
So I will..."LET YOU GO"...

Winners versus Losers
The Winner is always a part of the answer;
The Loser is always a part of the problem.
The Winner always has a program;
The Loser always has an excuse.
The Winner says, "Let me do it for you;"
The Loser says, "That's not my job."
The Winner sees an answer for every problem;
The Loser sees a problem in every answer.
The Winner says, "It may be difficult but it's possible;"
The Loser says, "It may be possible but it's too difficult."

THE PROMISES AS AN AFFIRMATION

You can use the “promises” as an affirmation and they become much more powerful when you personalize them in the “I” form, but remember it is still a “We” program. Just read them aloud to yourself and see how you feel afterwards….if at first you feel resistance and disbelief, that means that you might need to work on your faith and your belief system about yourself.
These promises have come true for billions of people around the world who at one time felt just like you.  They have come true for me in my life, and they come true for you too.

THE PROMISES

"If I am painstaking about this phase of my development, I will be amazed before I am half way through. I am going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. I will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. I will comprehend the word serenity and I will know peace. No matter how far down the scale I have gone, I will see how my experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. I will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in my fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. My whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and economic security will leave me. I will intuitively know how to handle situations, which use to baffle me. I will suddenly realize that God is doing for me what we could not do for myself."
Are these extravagant promises…”I think not” they are being fulfilled in me and around me…..they will always materialize if I work for them.

The Illusion
At the end of the day, I return to the exact same place,
Resuming the train of my own deep thoughts that run at their own pace
But as these thoughts reach darker depths ,and sped right through my mind
I am overcome with the most painful feelings that any heart can find

But all of this stops in an immediate halt as soon as my eyes meet the mirror
For what it reveals there is so unusual that I step forward to see clearer
Who I see standing there ,depicted on this face,
Is a girl who looks to be my age ,and who is standing in my place
On her face is a smile ,careless and serene,
In her deep brown eyes ,there is a happy gleam
Her hair seems to glow with its own inner light
And her nails appear to be smooth and healthy ,not victims of nervous bite
Her arms appear unblemished by any painful bruises
And I sense her mind doesn’t falter while making the decisions she chooses
She continues to gaze straight back at me, so I look deeper into her eyes
And I am stunned when I see that she has no masks and isn’t committed to telling lies

I take a look behind her eyes and I see no emotional bruises,
I also see no reflections of thoughts that revolve around knives and nooses
It is now that i choose to look away , avoiding this girls` gaze
Because I am not perfect like her , I’ve lived no happy days

So instead I look down at myself , hoping that I had changed ...
But I only see me as I was ,embarrassed and ashamed
My face is etched with constant sorrow, because of all the things I see
My eyes lack a happy gleam ,because I am simply me

My hair hangs limp and lifeless ,with no inner light to be seen
And my nails are rough and jagged ... unhealthy , short and lean
In my heart are broken vessels ,along with dark a tinted bruise
And my mind simply stutters when there is a direction I must choose

I know I’ve known this all my life , but now the pain is unbearable
So I looked back up to the perfect girl ,of whom I’m incomparable
But I should’ve known that one gaze was all I’d be allowed
For when I looked back in the mirror ,she could not be found
What greeted me instead was my very own face
And my eyes and the eyes of their reflection met across the tiny space
And for a moment...just a moment...I thought I could see her again
And , indeed I saw her deep in my eyes...very deep within
But only for a mere moment..because a moment later she was gone
Maybe to be seen again , and I realized this work would be long
I wondered just who she had been , and then I came to a conclusion
We were both the same person--perhaps ,in some way ,she hadn’t been an Illusion...

WATERS EDGE

I wait for you beside the still water;
I want to run and find you;
I want to guide you to the water’s edge
and seat you in the small canoe
that will carry you across the murky depth.

I want to place the paddle in your hands
and teach you how to stroke.
guiding the canoe gently through
so little water splashes and your way is smooth.

It’s hard to wait beside the shore and only
hope you’ll find your way;
wondering how long you’ll take or if you’ll
stray to far away;
knowing you have never tread down this path before;

the grasses hide and sometimes disappear
in the treacherous and sodden marshes;
that only those who know the secrets of this
path can safely follow to the water’s edge.

and yet I wait beside the water deep
believing you’ll be here;
knowing you must find your own way even
if your foot should slip;
never really doubting, however long it takes,
that one day you’ll arrive.

although weary you may be;
and even if your back is bent with burdens
much to heavy,
you’ll keep going until the water’s edge you reach.

I hope, when, at last, the water’s edge you see,
you’ll take my offered hand that reaches out to meet you.
I know you won’t be smiling for the journey will be long;
but I’m not expecting anything.
it’s not for me I’m waiting.

I only want to be there to help you with your load.
when, at last, you’re here at the still water.
and then if you allow me, I’ll hold steady
the small canoe until you’ve entered
and stretched your feet.
your burden I will place beside you,
and handing you the paddle, I will guide your stroke.

Until alone, as all canoers are, your paddle you begin to push.
and smoothly you alone, move across the water still and deep.

PLEASE HEAR WHAT I AM NOT SAYING

Don’t be fooled by me.
Don’t be fooled by the face I wear.
For I wear a mask, a thousand masks,
masks that I’m afraid to take off,
and none of them is me.
Pretending is an art that’s second nature with me,
but don’t be fooled.
I give you the impression that I’m secure,
that all is sunny and unruffled with me, within as well as without.
That confidence, is my name, and coolness is my game,
that the water’s calm and I’m in command,
that I need no one.
But don’t believe me.
My surface may seem smooth but my surface is a mask,
ever-varying and ever-concealing.
Beneath lies no complacence.
Beneath lies confusion and fear and aloneness.
But I hide this.  I don’t want anybody to know it.
I panic at the thought of my weakness and fear of being exposed.
That’s why I frantically create a mask to hide behind,
a nonchalant sophisticated facade, to help me pretend.
To shield me from the glance that knows.
But such a glance is precisely my salvation.
My only hope and I know it.
That is, if it’s followed by acceptance,
if it’s followed by love.
It’s the only thing that can liberate me from myself,
from my own self-built prison walls,
from the barriers I so painstakingly erect.
It’s the only thing that will assure me of what I can’t assure myself,
that I’m really worth something.
But I don’t tell you this . I dont dare. I’m afraid to.
I’m afraid your glance will not be followed by acceptance,
will not be followed by love.
I’m afraid you’ll think less of me, that you’ll laugh,
and your laugh would kill me.
I’m afraid that deep-down I’m nothing, that I’m just no good,
and that you will see this and reject me.
so I play my game, my desperate pretending game,
with a facade of assurance without
and a trembling child within.
So begins the glittering but empty parade of masks,
and my life becomes a front.
I idly chatter to you in the suave tones of surface talk.
I tell you everything that’s really nothing,
and nothing of what’s everything,
of what’s crying within me.
so when I’m going through my routine,
do not be fooled by what I’m saying.
Please listen carefully and try to hear what I’m not saying,
what I’d like to be able to say
but what I can’t say.
I don’t like to hide.
I don’t like to play superficial phony games.
I want to stop playing them.
I want to be genuine and spontaneous and me,
but you’ve got to help me.
You’ve got to hold out your hand
even when that’s the last thing I seem to want.
Only you can wipe away from my eyes the blank stare
 of the breathing dead.
Only you can call me into aliveness.
Each time you’re kind and gentle and encouraging,
each time you try to understand because you really care,
my heart begins to grow wings,
very small wings, very feeble wing, but wings!!!
With your power to touch me into feeling
you can breath life into me.
I want you to know that.
I want you to know how important you are to me,
how you can be a creator - an honest-to-God creator
of the person that is me…..if you choose to.
you alone can break down the wall behind which I tremble,
you alone can remove my mask,
you alone can release me from my shadow-world of panic
and uncertainty, from my lonely prison, if you choose to.
Please choose to.  Do not pass me by.
It will not be easy for you.
A long conviction or worthlessness builds strong walls.
The nearer you approach to me
the blinder I may strike back.
It’s irrational, but despite what the books say about man,
I am often irrational.
I fight against the very things that I cry out for.
But I am told that love is stronger than strong walls,
and in this lies my hope.
Please try to beat down those walls with firm hands
but with gentle hands for my inner child is very sensitive.
Who am I, you may wonder?
I am someone you know very well.
For I am every man you meet
and I am every woman you meet.

PAINT BRUSH

I keep my paint brush with me
Wherever I may go,
In case I need to cover up
So the real me won't show.

I'm so afraid to show you me,
Afraid of what you'll do - that
You might laugh or say mean things.
I'm afraid I might lose you.

I'd like to remove all my paint coats
To show you the real, true me,
But I want you to try and understand,
I need you to accept what you see.

So if you'll be patient and close your eyes,
I'll strip off all my coats real slow.
Please understand how much it hurts
To let the real me show.

Now my coats are all stripped off.
I feel naked, bare and cold,
And if you still love me with all that you see,
You are my friend, pure as gold.

I need to save my paint brush, though,
And hold it in my hand,
I want to keep it handy
In case somebody doesn't understand.

So please protect me, my dear friend
And thanks for loving me true,
But please let me keep my paint brush with me
Until I love me too.

MY NEW BEST FRIEND

Today I met a great new friend
Who knew me right away
it's funny how she understood
All I had to say

She listened to my problems
She listened to my dreams
We talked about love and life
She'd been there too it seems

I never once felt judged by her
She knew just how I felt
She seemed to just accept me
And all the problems I'd been dealt

She didn't interrupt me
Or need to have her say
She just listened very patiently
And didn't go away

I wanted her to understand
how much this meant to me
But as I went to hug her
Something startled me

I put my arms in front of me
And went to pull her nearer
And realized that my new best friend
Was nothing but a mirror.......

Life's Pathway

At times, life's path
seems filled with things
that make the going rough,
and we wish there were
a smoother road,
for we feel we've had enough........
but, if we pause a moment
and remember Who's in charge,
The hills that loom ahead of us
no longer seem so large,
and every rock before us,
when we know we're not alone,
becomes, not just a stumbling block,
but one more stepping stone.
You've overcome so many things,
and, every time, you've grown
through sheer determination
and the wisdom that you've shown.
so as you face this journey,
from the moment you begin,
Know that God will guide you,
And you'll have the strength to win.

Let Me Love You One Day at a Time ~
Let me love you one day at a time...

and please love me the very same way. May we never learn all there is to know about love, but every day together will teach us a little more about ourselves and the special kind of happiness we can bring to each other. One of the best things you've helped me learn is that love starts with being honest, speaking straight from how we really feel. I like how we've opened doors and windows of our lives, and invited each other to come in, look around, and get acquainted. The more I'm with you, the more at home I feel.
Let me love you one day at a time...

Why talk about "always" and say things we're not sure we mean when we can talk about today and mean exactly what we say. Let's think of each sunrise as a fresh start, a brand new beginning... and try to fill each day with as much love as it can hold. I know you're not always going to be exactly the same person Sunday through Saturday, January through December, and neither am I. We both need laughing times and crying times... and time for every mood in between. The important thing is that you can be the kind of you that feels most natural and that I can be my most favorite kind of me. That's what makes us so comfortable together...it's also what keeps us from taking too much for granted.
Let me love you one day at a time...

Let's not wonder how long love will last but how beautiful we can make it grow. Let's give our best to each other, but let's never expect miracles of our love. There's no need to...the reality of you and me is better than all the impossible dreams and fantasies I've ever imagined. Being with you is feeling proud, blessed, grateful for each hour we share.
Let me love you one day at a time…
not according to any How-To book, or by someone else's set of rules... but simply for who you are and how you are with me. And please love me, not for what I might be molded into, but for what I am here and now. Don't expect me to be someone all good and all giving, someone who could never disappoint you... someone too right to be real and too perfect to be me. I'm just as human as anyone I know... and very thankful that you are, too. Let's try to remember that love means keeping in touch with each other's thoughts and feelings... listening not just to words, but to the emotions behind them...seeing, not just the smiles and frowns but the hurt and pleasures that cause them.
Let me love you one day at a time...
starting today. Let's have the courage to try to change whatever needs changing about us, and wisdom to know what should never be changed. Believing in ourselves and in our ability to handle whatever tomorrow brings... and trusting that this love we share will continue to grow stronger as the future years unfold...

One Beautiful Day at a Time.

DON’T LOOK BACK

As you travel through life there are always those
times when decisions just have to be made,
when the choices are hard and solutions seem
scarce and the rain seems to soak your parade!

There are some situations where all you can
do is to simply let go and move on,
gather courage together and choose a direction
that carries you toward a new dawn.

So pack up your troubles and take a step forward.
The process of change can be tough.
But think about all the excitement ahead,
if you can be willing enough!

There could be adventures you never imagined
just waiting around the next bend
and wishes and dreams just about to come true
in ways you can't yet comprehend!

Perhaps you'll find friendships that spring from
new interests, as you challenge your status quo
and learn there are so many options in life,
and so many ways you can grow!

Perhaps you'll go places you never expected
and see things that you've never seen,
or travel to fabulous, faraway worlds and
wonderful spots in between!

Perhaps you'll find warmth, affection and caring,
a "somebody special" who's there
to help you stay centered and listen with interest
to stories and feelings you share.

Perhaps you'll find comfort in knowing your
friends
are supportive of all that you do
and believe that whatever decisions you make,
they'll be the right choices for you!

So keep putting one foot in front of the other
and taking your life day by day.
There's a brighter tomorrow that's just down the
road.
Don't look back, you're not going that way!

After a while you learn

the subtle difference between

holding a hand and chaining a soul

and you learn

that love doesn't mean leaning

and company doesn't always mean security.

And you begin to learn

that kisses aren't contracts

and presents aren't promises

and you begin to accept your defeats

with your head up and your eyes ahead

with the grace of woman, not the grief of a child

and you learn

to build all your roads on today

because tomorrow's ground is

too uncertain for plans

and futures have a way of falling down

in mid-flight.

After a while you learn

that even sunshine burns

if you get too much

so you plant your own garden

and decorate your own soul

instead of waiting for someone

to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure

you really are strong

you really do have worth

and you learn

and you learn

with every goodbye, you learn...

Acceptance is…..
the road to peace.
Letting go of the worst
holding on to the best
and finding the hope inside
that continues throughout life

Acceptance is….
The hearts best defense
loves greatest asset
and the easiest way
to keep believing in
yourself and others

Acceptance…..
does not mean
you will ever be perfect
it simply means that you will
honor the imperfections
that will always be present
in life.
